Adoption sponsors help dogs and cats that have been overlooked or who have special needs find their adoptive homes more quickly. Sponsorship donations are accepted in any amount and will be applied towards the adoption fee of one or more animals. Donors wishing to sponsor a specific dog or cat should call during business hours to discuss options.
Adapting to a new family, rules, and environment can take time for an adopted pet. Since every animal is unique, your pet may settle in faster or slower than what these general guidelines suggest.
Moving can be tough on everyone, especially pets! Give your new companion at least three days to unwind after bringing them home. During this time, it’s best to avoid trips to pet stores and dog parks.
After three weeks, most animals begin to settle in, and their true personalities start to emerge. You might observe some new behaviors, making this an ideal time to reach out to our adoption team if you need any assistance.
Pets start to fit into your regular routine and tend to feel more secure during this timeframe.
Featured Animal of the Week
Bear, a beautiful 2-year-old German Shepherd, was adopted in July 2024 and lived happily with his dad until he passed away in April 2026. According to family, they bonded quickly and were inseparable. Bear is loyal and protective and would do best as an only animal! He's a big boy at 108 pounds and very powerful. Due to the sudden change in his life, Bear is confused and sad. A temporary foster home would be an ideal environment for Bear as he transitions to a new adoptive home. If you are interested in fostering Bear, you can submit a foster application at https://hsburnettcty.org/foster/ or contact the shelter’s foster coordinator, Bradi Petschke at 715-557-1896.
Review our available pets, either online or stop at the shelter. It’s okay if you’re not sure which companion would be best for you. We’re always here to help. You can make an appointment with us for a visit, or stop by to meet all of our wonderful companions waiting for homes.
We require people to complete an application to adopt a shelter companion to ensure the best fit for both the humans and four-footers.
After you submit your application, we’ll contact you to schedule a meet and greet. If everything goes as we hope, you’ll be bringing your new friend home with you. It’s time to celebrate. Please note: We don’t guarantee same-day adoptions, but if you are traveling a distance, please contact us to see if we can arrange the adoption in one trip.

When you adopt a shelter companion, you change their life. Many of our shelter companions have been without a home, or surrendered, or even from unfortunate situations. You will provide a safe, loving home and make their world better.
