When I first met Capone at the Humane Society of Burnett County, my heart broke for him. At 15 years old, deaf and struggling with arthritis, this sweet senior had been surrendered when his owner moved to assisted living. The shelter environment was clearly overwhelming for him—too loud, too busy, too much. The foster program is designed to help pups like Capone. What I didn’t realize then was how much joy this senior pup would bring into my life.
Now affectionately known as Cap, Cappy, or Mr. Cap, he’s completely transformed in my home. I’ve watched him emerge from his shell day by day, his personality blossoming in ways I never expected. He loves being outside with my resident dogs, Rio and Millie, taking our daily walks together, enjoying his specially cooked meals, and relaxing on the deck in the evenings. He’s claimed his favorite chair and gets quite upset if anyone dares to sit in it. He follows me everywhere, rolls happily in the grass, and has his own special ways of letting me know exactly what he wants. Given his age and special needs, my home has become his permanent foster home so he won’t have to adjust to any more changes. The Humane Society has supported me every step of the way, providing everything I need from answering questions to supplying food and addressing his special needs. Being a foster has been beyond rewarding—yes, I opened my home to an animal in need, but the love and gratitude I’ve received in return are gifts beyond measure.
